The Virginia General Assembly is a bicameral legislature, meeting annually for a maximum of 60 days in even numbered years, and 45 days in odd numbered years. The Virginia General Assembly consists of an upper chamber, the Senate, and a lower chamber, the House of Delegates. The 40 member Virginia Senate is currently controlled by the Republicans, holding 21 seats, with the Senate Democrats holding 19 seats. In the 100 member House of Delegates, Republicans hold 51 seats, and the Democrats hold 49 seats. Ralph Northam serves as the 73rd Governor of Virginia, he is a member of the Democratic Party.
