The Texas Legislature is a bicameral legislature, meeting for a regular 140 day session in odd numbered years. The Texas Legislature consists of an upper chamber, the Senate, and a lower chamber, the House of Representatives. The 31 member Texas Senate is currently controlled by the Republicans, holding 20 seats, with the Senate Democrats holding 11 seats. In the 150 member Texas House, Republicans hold 95 seats, and the Democrats hold 55 seats. Greg Abbott serves as the 48th Governor of Texas, he is a member of the Republican Party. 2017 marked the 85th Texas Legislative session, the 86th Texas Legislative session is set to convene in January 2019.
